Accident , unexpected event, typically sudden in nature and associated with injury, loss, or harm. Accidents are a common feature of the human experience and result in injury or permanent disability to large numbers of people worldwide every year. Many accidents also involve damage to or loss of property. Accidents can occur anywhere, including in the home, during transportation, in the hospital, on the sports field, or in the workplace. With appropriate  safety  precautions and awareness of one’s actions and  environment , many accidents can be avoided or prevented. Motor vehicle  accidents Worldwide, motor vehicle accidents are a major cause of  death , and, despite improvements in  automobile  safety, projections have indicated that deaths from traffic crashes will increase significantly by 2030 because of increased motor vehicle ownership. Examples of causes of traffic accidents include speeding, drunk driving, distracted driving, and inexperienced...

Road Accident

  1.  Introduction A road traffic accident (RTA) is any injury due to crashes originating from, terminating with or involving a vehicle partially or fully on a public road. It is projected that road traffic injuries will move up to the third position by the year 2020 among leading causes of the global disease burden.  They are considerable economic losses to victims, their families, and to countries as a whole. The Global status report on road safety 2013 indicates that worldwide the total number of road traffic deaths remain unacceptably high at 1.24 million per year. Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death among young people, aged 15–29 years. Children, pedestrians, cyclists and older people are among the most vulnerable of road users constituting half of those dying on the world’s roads. Majority of the world's fatalities on the roads occur in low-income and middle-income countries, even though these countries have approximately half of the world's vehicle...

Pedestrial accidents protection

How do you make cars safer for pedestrians?  Traditionally, vehicle safety has tended to focus on improving the protection that a car can offer to an occupant, but vehicles can also be designed to be safer for pedestrians if an accident occurs. Pedestrian protection is achieved by designing the front of a vehicle so that pedestrians and other vulnerable road users are less likely to be injured if they are hit, and European legislation, Pedestrian Protection Regulation 78/2009, has now been introduced to ensure that all cars offer some level of protection. This legislation is expected to amended during 2018. It will never be possible to design car fronts so that they do not injure pedestrians in all circumstances, but there is much more that can be done to change the shape and the stiffness of car fronts so that injuries are less likely and less severe. The changes in the shape of many modern vehicle fronts, compared to older vehicles, has been influenced by pedestr...

Pedestrian safety manual  Why was the manual developed?  Studies show a disproportionate involvement of pedestrians, cyclists and motorized two-wheelers in road traffic injuries. For instance, the first Global status report on road safety revealed that nearly half (46%) of those killed in road traffic crashes are pedestrians, cyclists or users of motorized two wheelers . More recently, the second Global status report on road safety 2013: supporting a decade of action examined pedestrians independently from other vulnerable road users, and showed that 22% of those killed on the world’s roads are pedestrians. As shown in both the Global status report on road safety and World report on road traffic injury prevention, there are regional and national differences in the distribution of road-user mortality. Countries must address the problem of pedestrian safety by implementing effective measures. There are several recommendations that call on governments to take into...

Walking, way of life for both residents and visitors. Yet, not enough has been done to protect pedestrians’ safety while they are on foot for vacations, school, church, and work.  In fact, a recent report reveals that the metro area of Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach-Miami was 13th among the United States’ most dangerous metropolitan areas for pedestrians between 2010 and 2019. According to the report  by Smart Growth America, an organization focused on pedestrian safety, there were 1,675 pedestrian fatalities during this time period or 2.8 deaths per 100,000 residents in South Florida alone. Florida had 5,893 pedestrian deaths during the same decade. Causes of Pedestrian Accidents Being hit by a car while walking can be one of the most traumatic experiences someone might ever face. Unfortunately, with so many pedestrians on roads, these accidents happen more and more every day. Distracted Driving It’s never been easier to become distracted while behind the wheel. Distr...

Child abuse

What Is Child Abuse? The physical, psychological or sexual maltreatment or neglect of a child is termed as child abuse. This can happen at the hands of a parent, a close relative or a caregiver and has a significant detrimental effect on the child’s psyche. The highest risk of child abuse is to children who are five years and below. When both parents are out to work, the child is often entrusted to the care of a babysitter, a crèche or a family member. In this case, it is natural for the parents to be concerned about the child’s safety. Types of Child Abuse There are many ways in which a child may be maltreated or abused, and these include sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse and neglect. Physical abuse occurs when a parent or a caregiver causes deliberate p...

Malnutrition in India

Malnutrition is a condition which occurs when there is a deficiency of certain vital nutrients in a person’s diet. The deficiency fails to meet the demands of the body leading to effects on the growth, physical health, mood, behaviour and other functions of the body. Malnutrition commonly affects children and the elderly. Malnutrition affects all age groups but is more common in developing countries and among children, elderly and pregnant women. A quarter of all admissions in the UK are due to malnutrition . Malnutrition kills 300,000 individuals worldwide each year and is responsible for about half of all deaths in young children and it raises the risk of infections with diarrhea, malaria, measles and respiratory tract infections in children. Symptoms of malnutrition The most common symptom of malnutrition is weight loss...
